A man sits alone in a sealed room with a huge rulebook. Slips of paper covered in Chinese characters come in through a slot. He looks up each shape in the book, copies out the reply it tells him to, and pushes it back through. Outside, fluent speakers are delighted: the answers are witty and warm. The man doesn't know a word of Chinese.
