The Balance

Is the money in your account a real object, or a story everyone agrees to keep telling?

The Balance

Your money is a number on a screen. There's no drawer somewhere with your name on it and your notes inside. The bank has lent most of it out to strangers. If everyone asked for theirs on the same Tuesday, the number would turn out to be a promise rather than a thing. Still, you check it, you feel better or worse, you plan your year around it.

Is the money in your account a real object, or a story everyone agrees to keep telling?

Then ask

  • Does cash in your hand feel more real than the number, and should it?
  • If the bank's screen said zero tomorrow and everyone said it was a glitch, would you be poor for the afternoon?
  • Name something else that only works because nobody tests it.

The classics and some new ones. A scenario, the question it forces, and the follow-ups that make it bite.
