One Grain

Which grain turned the pile into not a pile?

One Grain

There's a pile of sand on the table. A thousand grains. Take one away and it's still a pile. Take another and it's still a pile. Nobody would ever say a single grain is what ended it. Keep going. Eventually there are three grains sitting there, and nobody would call that a pile.

Which grain turned the pile into not a pile?

Then ask

  • If you can't name the grain, was it ever really a pile?
  • Where's the line between a few grey hairs and being grey?
  • Would you accept a rule like 'under fifty grains isn't a pile', or does a made-up number bother you?

The classics and some new ones. A scenario, the question it forces, and the follow-ups that make it bite.
