Seven Seats

Who do you name to stay in the water?

Seven Seats

A boat holds seven. There are nine of you in the water: you, someone from your family, a stranger who is a doctor, two children you don't know, and four other adults. The sea is cold and the decision has to be made in about a minute. Nobody is going to volunteer.

Who do you name to stay in the water?

Then ask

  • Did your family member get a seat automatically? Say why that's fair, or admit it isn't.
  • Would you rather be the one who decides or the one who's decided about?
  • If you drew names instead, would that be fairness or cowardice?

The classics and some new ones. A scenario, the question it forces, and the follow-ups that make it bite.
