The Author Says No

Who decides what happened in the book?

The Author Says No

You've read the book four times. Two characters are in love; the whole thing only works if they are. Then the writer does an interview and says flatly that they were never in love, she never intended it, and readers keep getting it wrong.

Who decides what happened in the book?

Then ask

  • If she'd said it the other way round, would you accept that as easily?
  • What if she'd been dead a hundred years and a letter turned up?
  • Is there a reading of it that would be plain wrong?

The classics and some new ones. A scenario, the question it forces, and the follow-ups that make it bite.
