Nine Months of Your Body

Do you unplug?

Nine Months of Your Body

You wake up in a hospital wired to a stranger. Overnight, doctors connected your bloodstream to theirs. Their organs have failed; yours will keep them alive. In nine months they'll recover and walk away. Unplug now and they die. You didn't consent, nobody asked, and the person in the next bed is entirely innocent. You'd be in that bed for nine months.

Do you unplug?

Then ask

  • Does it change if it's nine days? Nine years?
  • Does it change if the stranger is your brother?
  • If you'd stay, would you say someone who unplugged had killed them?

The classics and some new ones. A scenario, the question it forces, and the follow-ups that make it bite.
